Southwest Church of Christ

Children’s Ministry

At Southwest we are a “Christ Focused Family, committed to Living for God, Loving each other, and Lighting the World.”  Ingrained in that mission is a commitment to our children to teach them about the saving power of God’s love.  That is why we start our Sunday School classes at the same place the Bible does, at the very beginning of life.  Our Children’s Program ministers to children and their families from birth through 6th grade, and encompasses many different classes and activities.  We rely on a small army of wonderful volunteers to make this possible!  We care about our children’s safety, and all of our staff, teachers and volunteers have met the Child Abuse Prevention Committee’s requirements.

Sunday Morning

10:00 a.m. Worship Services (Summer schedule)

Summer Camps

Kids get to know God and one another better each summer at Camp Yamhill!  Southwest raises funds each year to defray the cost of of our Kids who want to go to Camp, beginning with those who have completed the 3rd grade.  Camp Yamhill is a great way to help our kids strengthen their faith, led by amazing counselors, including some of our own adults and Youth Group teens.

Bible Challenge

Bible Challenge is a great way to plant God’s Word in the hearts of our 4th-6th graders!  Each Spring, teams of kids from various Churches of Christ in the Portland area spend 12 weeks studying one book of the Bible, learning content and memorizing scripture.  In June the teams get together for friendly competition, answering Bible questions and quoting Scripture.  No matter which team takes first place, everyone wins when we spend time in God’s word!

Vacation Bible School

Southwest has built a reputation for an amazing VBS!!  Beginning in 1976, we now average over 300 kids each year!  Vacation Bible School offers Bible classes, skits, songs, crafts and recreation all with the purpose of teaching our children about Jesus.  A Mom’s VBS is available at the same time.  Preparation begins months in advance, and in the weeks leading up to VBS week, our building begins to transform!  Teachers and volunteers turn our auditorium and classrooms into an adventure!  The week concludes with a program for the kids to show parents and friends what they’ve learned.

Preschool

Beginning in 1992, Southwest began offering a free preschool program.  We now have an enrollment of 60, with a waiting list.

LifeGroups

Many of our home Bible study groups offer special activities for kids while parents have a quiet study time.  Other groups include kids in a family style study.  Find a LifeGroup that suits your family’s needs!

We are in the process of hiring a Children’s Minister and are excited about this addition to our staff.
